Ovulationclear fertility monitor In the area of saliva-based ovulation prediction, ferning and crystal formation are synonyms to describe the crystallization of saliva. The term ferning is more widely used because the crystal pattern appears like a “fern” when viewed under a microscope.
In 1945, Papanicolau discovered the phenomenon of crystal formations in dried cervical fluid. In 1969, Dr. Biel Cassals, studied the relationship between the crystallization of saliva and hormonal changes during female menstrual cycle. His study results indicate that the ferning in dried saliva is virtually identical in appearance to the arborization effect of dried cervical fluid. In 1994, Prof. Galati carried on research of saliva ferning based ovulation prediction and the study results show that the accuracy is about 98%.

Each woman menstrual cycle has three phases: follicular phase, ovulation phase, and luteal phase. The follicular phase begins with the start of menstruation and ends with ovulation. The main hormone controlling the follicular phase is estrogen hormone.
When a woman is about to ovulate, the estrogen hormone levels in her system will have an apparent rise. With this rise of the estrogen hormone, the concentration of electrolytes in the saliva becomes intense. The increased concentration of electrolytes is the chemical basis for formulation of saliva ferning patterns.
Ovulationclear is based on above theory between saliva ferning and ovulation. It not only captures high resolution saliva image but also provide an effective way to pinpoint ovulation up to 5 days in advance.
